We should start a new discussion on a new GAP scoring proposal, that considers turnpoint bonus or "distance checkpoints" bonus during the task.

It´s like OZGAP 2005, but taking into consideration also the leading during the speedsection of the task.

The first variation as proposed by Gerolf on the tickets is to have a Leading to Turnpoint bonus, on which the turnpoints should have a larger radii* (i´m not sure if this is the correct way for saying it) for the bonus trap and then the standar radii for getting the turnpoint and turning to the next one.

My proposal is to have "distance checkpoints" that don´t be turnpoint related but speed distance related. You only have to cut the speed section distance in half or more, and give the bonus to the pilots that achieves those spots first.

This second proposal has the advantage of having a nicer distribution of the leading bonus, as it is related to distance achieved and not to turnpoint locations, that could lead to "too early bonus" or "too late bonus". Also you can have a fixed number of bonus "hot spots" during every race, regardless of the number of turnpoints that it has, or the total distance to be flown.

This bonus should be given to the pilots that achieves the distances, on the order they get to them, regardless if they make it all the way to goal.
This is different from the leading coef. as this is only given to the pilots that makes goal.

The issue would be that the pilots that want to get the bonuses would have to make a pre-flight calculations of where the bonuses would be laying during the task, as there are no turnpoints or waypoints that tells you during flight how close are you from the "distance checkpoint". Still, the whole philosophy would be quite simple: If you are leading, you will get the leading points.

The difficulty would come when you have a nice triangle, that has 400 mts turnpoints on each corner, so the speed section distance won´t be the one that you get on your gps or flight instrument, but the shortest one as stated on FS documentation files, so figuring out when you are in the "distance checkpoint" when your instrument is telling you how far away are you to the next turnpoint center (not the shortest place) would be quite tricky.

I still think that it´s a nice idea, and that this way we can have somehow a middle point between the leading coef of GAP 2002 and the Start and Arrival of OZGAP 2005.

A quick reply to parts of it: Bonus for leading to turnpoints (as Gerolf suggested in Mexico) will possible soon.

(got way too good weather right now to do much work or FS stuff so not much will happen until over the weekend – have to do some flying and run a norwegian league comp – had one last weekend with 2 tasks and 50 pilots – FS worked fine (not me doing the scoring)).
