Wrong SS time on enter cylinder

Reported by: Matjaž Owned by: Joerg Ewald

Hi, pilot has entered the start cylinder two times - first time to early, second time he got it right. The entry point is corectly marked on the track view, but FS takes early (wrong) entry. The pilot number 40 (10th place) has lost some points due to jump-the-gun factor. Can you please advice... we are in the middle of the competition (Aeros winter Race).

Hi there, thanks for your message.

There are two things at work here that make the results a little weird:

  1. Your task definition includes the 4 km cylinder around VGV008 twice, once as SSS, and then as the first turnpoint. I don't quite know why, but FS seems to be thrown off by this a bit. After I delete the second instance of VGV008, pilot 40 is no longer penalized.
  1. But now his start is much later, and you may be wondering why. The thing is, FS does not really know about Entry or Exit cylinders. For FS (and other scoring tools, from what I know), an Entry cylinder is one where the first cylinder after SSS is concentric to SSS (around the same waypoint), but smaller than SSS. In any other case, when the first cylinder after SSS is around a different waypoint than the one used for SSS (regardless whether that cylinder then lies inside or outside of the SSS cylinder), the start is an Exit start. This is why now, for pilot 40, the start is when he leaves the SSS cylinder the last time, at 13:46:59

Task setters make this mistake quite frequently (very prominently right now during the hang gliding world championships in Valle de Bravo).

So from what I can tell, FS is working fine, and I'm closing this ticket again. Let me know if you have any further questions (just add a comment here below).
