#382 closed enhancement (fixed)

Category scoring as independent competition scoring instead of filter

Description

Categories (e.g. "Sports class" or "female") are traditionally scored by filtering the pilots from that category from the overall scoring. Due to the nature of GAP scoring, with decreasing point differences with increasing goal times, slower pilots will invariably have similar task scores, making for very tight category rankings where luck can play a big role in who is in front at the end of a competition.

To remedy that, we have recommended scoring categories as independent competitions instead. This leads to clear point separation between the pilots, and encourages them to race among themselves because there will be a bigger point difference between coming first or second in your category. But so far, not many score keepers were willing to do the extra work.

With this enhancement, we enable competition organizers to score categories independently within one FSDB file, by selecting an option when setting up the competition.

When setting up a competition, choose "Separate scoring" in the "Category scoring" section of the "Competition Details" window. Then, when you produce the results for a category, this category will be re-scored as its own competition in the background.

Note that this can lead to a situation where pilot order in the overall ranking is not identical to their order in the category ranking. We think this is acceptable since one says how the pilots compare while flying in the overall race, and the other says how they compare while flying in a race that only looks at this category.
