Scoring formulas


Discontinued. Use GAP2008 instead, will do the same but better. If you really need it GAP2000 (with all it's faults and unintended features) copy it from and place in same folder as FsComp.exe.

!OzGap2005 scoring formula in FS is an attempt to recreate !OzGap2005 as it was in RACE.

With GAP2007 one can do exactly the same but has more options.

!OzGap2005 has been developed to simplify the sometimes confusing saga of Departure Points. Put simply, all the pilot has to do, is get to goal early!
Your Departure Time is irrelevant. The Departure time of any other pilot is irrelevant. All you have to do is time your exit from the launch so that you get to goal before anyone else.
Departure points are gone.
Place based Arrival Points are gone.
!OzGap2005 is simply a time based Arrival Points system that constitutes ¼ of the available speed points, that means that if the maximum Distance Points available is 600 points, 300 will be available to speed and 100 points will be available for arrival points. The rate at which the points drop of is fixed. The graph below shows the rate at which the points drop off.

You need to get to goal within 45 minutes of the first person in goal to get much in the way of usable arrival points. After about an hour the points are getting close to zero. Technically, the points are zero, one and a half hours after the first pilot in goal.
Points drop away quickly at first. 20 minutes after the first pilot arrives, approximately half of the available points are gone. Three quarters of an hour after the first pilot, the points are down to only approximately 15% of what was available.

But Why?

We want guys to get out in front to show their skill, and not just follow a gaggle. However if points are awarded for simply going early, then guys will go early, and then simply group up into gaggles and fly along.... Makes it all a bit pointless.....
We want a system that gets guys out in front at the business end of the task, towards the end, and not just 10 seconds in front, because that only shows who was more aggressive on final glide. We need guys to get in well before, like 10 minutes in front (or more), to show who can really fly.
So how do you get in front at the end? Get in front from the beginning and stay there, or break away and leave the gaggle behind. Both of these tactics require real skill, and that is what we want to see. This system is very simple, easy to explain, and effective. When tests were done by rescoring competition days with !OzGap2005 against older systems, pilots that went out in front and made goal scored better with !OzGap2005 than with older systems.
