## How to avoid severe punishment of pilots starting early

Sometimes a pilot may start early by a few seconds by accident.

At some meets the scoring system will give the pilot the minimum distance or distance points (no speed points) if they start early.

This seems a bit harsh.

In FS there is a couple of ways to deal with this.

First note this:

There is a difference between "open" time of a SS (speed section) turnpoint and "startgate" for a SS (speed section) turnpoint.

All turnpoints have a time period (defined by their open and close times) in which the pilot can get a valid crossing of the turnpoint cylinder.

The SS turnpoint may have one or more startgates as well as open and close times.

The first startgate marks the earliest time a pilot can get a valid crossing and also get time points without using the "Jump the Gun" feature.

### Only distance points for early starters

One way is to say that if a pilot starts before the first startgate, he does not get time points. He still get whatever distance he flies.

This is achieved by setting first startgate to a time later than the open time of the SS turnpoint. If the pilot takes the SS turnpoint in this period he will only get distance points. (If he goes before the SS turnpoint open time he'll get only the distance to the SS turnpoint.) (I'll bet he'll actually get the minimum distance, check this.)

### "Jump the Gun" - add time for early starters

The other way is to use the "Jump the Gun" feature:

(for this to work there must be a difference between the SS turnpoint open time and the first startgate time)

What is done is:

1. We add the difference between the pilot's SS time and the first startgate (SG-SS) to his start-time (this so that he does not get any extra departure bonus).
1. We mulitply (SG-SS) by the jump the gun factor (a value from 1 to ...) and add to the pilot's ES time.

So with, for example, a time-period of 10 minutes between open time and first startgate and jump the gun factor of 2:

• Pilot starts 5 minutes before first startgate and gets to ES: He will get 10 minutes added to his ES-time (meaning 5 minutes longer time) (using jump the gun factor of 4 means 10 minutes longer time). (This is very unclear.)

To set the task distance to include almost all of the start circle distance, start with a turnpoint at the center of the start circle and make it 100 meters radius (the minimum in 1.1.3). The start of the speed section is now the second turnpoint, which is the same turnpoint as the first turnpoint but with a larger radius (the radius of the start circle).

Also under Tools Options, check the "Ignore missing...." This means that you don't have to have tracklog points in the first cylinder the small one around the center of the start cylinder. Also uncheck the other check box in this dialog bxo, the one that starts: "Use tracklog filter..." Click Ok.

Set Geological coordinates in this dialog box to DM (degrees, minutes). Make these same changes in FsFlight.

Be extra cautious about the time values and your offset from UTC. Check to make sure that you have the right day set and the right offset. You'll use local time and then it will be offset to UTC time.
